Is Cake a Healthy Dessert?
It depends on the ingredients used. If you make your cake from scratch using high-quality and nutritious ingredients, then it’s definitely a healthier treat compared to the processed ready-to-eat treats. You can make your cakes healthy using these tips:
How to bake healthy cakes?
#1: Substitute Apple Sauce for Sugar
Mashed apple (applesauce) is a great substitute for sugar in cakes. Replace sugar with applesauce in the ratio 1:1. Just make sure that you reduce the proportion of other liquid ingredients in the cake like water, milk or other liquids. For every cup of applesauce, you add to the recipe, reduce other liquids by ¼ cup.
Applesauce also acts as a great substitute for fat. You can reduce the oil/fat content in the cake by using applesauce. For example, if a recipe asks you to add 1 cup butter, you can use ½ cup butter and ½ cup applesauce.
Baker’s Note: Use applesauce to substitute sugar or fat, not both.
#2: Use Whole Flour instead of Maida
All cake recipes use maida or all-purpose flour. Maida is refined flour. It’s highly processed and all healthy stuff like fiber, bran and germ are ripped off from wheat to make maida. Instead, of using maida, you can replace it with healthier flours like:
- Whole wheat flour
- Ragi flour
- Almond flour
- And other millet flours
Baker’s Note: The ratio to substitute maida with healthier flours is 1:1. Note that the cake may have a slightly denser texture, but the taste remains unchanged.
#3: Include Healthy Toppings
Generally, party cakes come with sugar-loaded toppings like candies, chocolates, frosting, etc. When baking at home, you can substitute these toppings with healthier alternatives like:
- Cut fruits
- Dark chocolate, etc.
Alternatively, you can also enjoy naked cakes without any toppings.
#4: Cut Down on Fat
While fat (butter/oil) is not unhealthy, if you’re diet conscious or looking to cut down on your calories you can substitute the fat content in your cake with healthier alternatives. As we mentioned above, applesauce is a great substitute for oil in cakes.
Another excellent substitute is mashed banana. If the recipe calls for 1 cup of butter or 1 cup of oil, substitute it with 1 cup of mashed banana and bake as usual.
For chocolate cakes, substitute 1 cup of butter with ¾ cup of pureed prunes + ¼ cup of boiling water. The taste is so delicious, that your loved ones will never believe that you’ve skipped butter.
#5: Include Wholesome Ingredients
Include nutritious ingredients like: nuts, vegetables (carrots, beetroot, zucchini, avocado), fruits, oats, honey, whole wheat flour, etc. To make your cakes healthy. Not only are these ingredients healthy, but they also add moisture and natural sweetness to your recipes making the final cake taste amazing.
